This mid century painting depicting a cathedral in France is a wonderful example of traditional representational art re-interpreted by a modern artist. The style is influenced by both fauvism and cubism and the artist brings vibrant life to the subject.
Charles LeClair painted for over 70 years in a long and successful career. He exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Whitney and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. A retrospective of his work was organized at Villanova Art Gallery and the Gross McCleaf Gallery in 1998. His is represented in several regional museums including the Butler Institute of American Art, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and McNay Art Institue.
The painting is in very good condition. It has some surface dirt/dust and does not appear to have been cleaned.
