Chromolithography is a form of lithography developed in the mid 19th century to replace hand colored prints. Printing involves the use of many lithographic stones (one for each color in the print). While laborious to produce, the technique was prized by artists and publishers for its ability to faithfully reproduce fine art.
Relatively rare in comparison to other prints, they were produced in volume only from the 1880s-19030s and fell out of use when modern methods of offset printing were developed.
