There is a lot of character and old world charm in this vintage astrolabe tray. The tray base is a composite board with gesso, gilt and the printed transfer of an ancient astrolabe illustration.
An astrolabe was an instrument formerly used to make astronomical measurements, typically of the altitudes of celestial bodies, and in navigation for calculating latitude, before the development of the sextant. It was widely used by both astronomers, astrologers and mariners. The mark on the bottom reads:Hand PaintedAlcohol ProofMade in JapanCondition:Fair condition - this piece was loved and used; however the worn look was what attracted me to the piece. I do not think it detracts from the look or functionality. Wear to the lacquer, making a few areas dull vs. shiny. Some small areas of paint loss. Chipping to rim of tray. Staining to the underside of the tray.Measures:13" Diameter, 3/4" High
